PI6 QuickTip #31: Instant Striped or Checkerboard Background

If you've ever wanted to make a striped or checkered background quickly, here's an easy way to do it. This technique takes advantage of the fact that PI automatically pastes new objects so that they are aligned with the top and left corners of the base image.

To make a striped background tile, first think about how narrow you want the stripes to be, for example, a small stripe 4 pixels high. Accordingly, make a new file 50 pixels wide and twice as tall as the stripe, e.g., 8 pixels high. If the striped background will have white in it, leave this canvas white. Otherwise, fill the new image with one of the desired stripe colors. Since I'm making a green and blue striped tile, I filled my image, shown below, with a pale green color.

50 X 8 pixel base image

Make a new image 50 pixels wide and 4 pixels high. Fill this image with the other stripe color. I've filled this one with blue.

make other stripe

Copy the blue image into the Clipboard. Paste it into the green image. It will align itself with the top and left edges of the base image automatically. Be careful -- don't move it. Right click, Merge All. Instant stripe!

To make sure it will look good on a web page, choose File, Preview in Browser, As Tiled Background. If it looks good, save it and upload to your server.

Making a checkerboard background tile is similarly easy. Think about how big you want the checks to be. Make a new image as wide as 2 checks and as tall as one check. For example, to make the checks 10 pixels square, make a new image 20 pixels wide by 10 pixels high. If one of the checks will be white, leave the new canvas white. Otherwise, fill it with one of the checkerboard colors.

20 X 10 pixel base image

Make a new image 10 X 10 pixels. Fill it with the other checkerboard color.

Copy the 10 X 10 pixel image into the Clipboard and paste it into the other image. It will align itself with the top and left edges of the base image automatically. Be careful not to move anything. Right click, Merge All. Copy this into the Clipboard.

2 checks made

Choose Edit, Expand and expand on the Top only, 10 pixels. Paste the two checks back into the image. They will be aligned with the top and left sides of the image. Choose Edit, Rotate & Flip, Flip Horizontally. Right click, Merge All. Instant checkerboard!
